Wichita Falls – the Texas Gateway
Wichita Falls, Texas is in the northeast panhandle plains of the state and is known as the Texas Gateway.
This is a beautiful residential town that prides itself on its sense of community and progressive economy. 107,000 people call Wichita Falls home and the Sheppard Air Force base resides here and trains for the U.S. Air Force.
The Falls themselves are tiered among rocks in a picture perfect setting. They are man made and were built 100 years ago to replace the old falls. There’s an adjacent park and picnicking grounds as well as trails to spend the day exploring. The weather’s fine in Texas so put on your sunscreen and enjoy the warmth!
This area is steeped in a rich history. The Wichita tribes who originally resided here were known for painting their faces so nicknamed Raccoon Eyes. After the Spanish settlers, cattlemen arrived here in the 1860’s and farmed the lush fields for many crops. In the early 1900’s the local business economy became about oil. Drilling for water for agriculture actually led to the pleasant surprise of Texas Tea and as a result, the economy boomed.
Today, Wichita Falls enjoys many things including great Arts and Culture with many museums and exhibits to visit and with shows such as the ballet and symphony to take in. There are great events all year long to enjoy and some great golf to be played in this city.
